Vice Chairman of The Related Group and Chairman of the Board of Gibraltar Private Bank & Trust will be recognized for his decades-long contributions towards the economic development of Miami-Dade County.
(Miami, FL – December 13, 2017 ) – The Miami-Dade Beacon Council, the county’s official public-private economic development partnership, is pleased to announce the recipient of the prestigious 2018 Jay Malina Award is Adolfo Henriques. A respected businessman and community leader and longtime banker in Miami, he currently serves as Vice Chairman of The Related Group and Chairman of the Board of Gibraltar Private Bank & Trust after holding numerous positions at many of Miami’s most recognizable financial institutions.
The 16th Annual Beacon Awards is a celebration of Miami-Dade’s growing economy and the community’s successful economic development strategic plan, One Community One Goal (OCOG). The signature event themed Light the Night, will recognize leadership and innovation in the following One Community One Goal categories that form the building blocks of a successful economy: Business Climate & Policy, Economic Development Marketing, Education & Workforce Development, Entrepreneurship & Innovation, Physical Infrastructure, Target Industries and Leadership.
The esteemed Jay Malina Award for leadership is presented annually to a local executive who has been an industry game changer and has played a pivotal role in Miami-Dade’s continued prosperity through professional achievement and civic participation. The award’s name pays tribute to the founder of the One Community One Goal (OCOG) initiative, Jay Malina, who developed the economic strategy to lift Miami-Dade out of the recession in the 1900s during his tenure with the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce. The OCOG initiative was relaunched in 2011 by Co-Chairs Adolfo Henriques and Alex Villoch, Publisher of the Miami Herald.
“Each year, the Jay Malina Award winner raises the bar. Adolfo Henriques is a community treasure who continues to shape Miami-Dade’s exciting future. We are thrilled to award him with the 2018 Jay Malina Award,” said Miami-Dade Beacon Council Chair, Nelson Lazo.
In addition to his role at The Related Group and Gibraltar Private Bank & Trust, Henriques serves on the Board of HEICO Corporation, Doctors Healthcare Plans, Inc. and Intcomex, Inc. He previously served as Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Florida East Coast Industries; and before that as Chief Executive Officer of the South Region for Regions Bank (and its predecessor Union Planters Bank) until 2005. Before Regions Bank, Mr. Henriques served in executive capacities at Bank of America’s predecessor banks since 1986. These positions included Chairman of NationsBank in South Florida and Executive Vice President of Barnett Bank. Mr. Henriques was also with The Bank of Nova Scotia and began his career as a Certified Public Accountant with the Public Health Trust and Ryder Systems in Miami, Florida.
A community leader with wide interests, soft spoken wisdom and a big heart, he demonstrates his considerable dedication to the community in numerous civic organizations such as Chairman of the Miami-Dade County Cultural Affairs Council, Chairman of the Superintendent’s Business Advisory Council, and as a member of the Orange Bowl Committee. He previously served as Chairman of the Financial Oversight Board for the City of Miami, Chairman of the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, Regional Chair of the Southeast Region for the Florida Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of Leadership Florida, Chairman of Florida International University, Chairman of the United Way of Miami-Dade, Chairman of the Greater Miami Convention and Visitor’s Bureau and the Beacon Council. Mr. Henriques also has served as Co-Chairman of the Miami Children’s Museum Capital Campaign, Chairman of Homes for South Florida and Greater Miami LISC, Chairman of the Epiphany School Advisory Council, Site Selection Chairman of the Community Partnership for the Homeless, Member of the Florida Board of Regents and served on the Mayor’s Blue-Ribbon Task Force for the airport.
“Adolfo’s leadership of such wide-ranging and effective community organizations is a testimony to his giving nature, altruism and true commitment to building a better Miami. He is one of this community’s greatest resources,” said Lazo.
